Irish Cable gets the payserver treatment. - 31-March-2010, 19:40

Looks like the people behind the starview boxes have got around UPC Ireland N3 card. Starview was one of the makers of the boxes that allowed viewing of the compromised N1-2 DVB-C system used in UK and Ireland for many years.

The release of the new Starview 6 box this month is reported to be decoding UPC N3 through card-sharing this time. I think it works like this. You buy your box and it comes with a "years sub" built in. You connect it to your router and the box connects to what I can only presume is some sort of card-farm maintained by the crew at starview. I would guess at a minimum the farm is located inside the Irish jurisdiction so the cards can be updated?? Given that it may have to sustain thousands of users if this became as popular as the last craze the card serving operation would have to be fairly impressive no? Surely they would at least have to pass traffic through some sort of anonymous proxy or the severs would be physically located in very short time.

Ive been reading that some of the idiots already using this are actually using UPC cable internet for their connection!!! I can only see this ending in tears. What are the chances of this operation not being quickly oversubscribed and those "one year" subs being turned off to make room for new users? Not good I think. Not to mention the massive bulls-eye of a target a centralised card-farm within the jurisdiction would provide. These payserver feckers will raise the profile of CS to uncomfortable levels IMO especially when the UK goes to N3 soon.

The strength of CS is in its distributed and anonymous nature. Having all your server IPs or gateway proxy IPs & ports known from the get go is a disaster. I see UPC throttling the ports and blocking the IPs they find pretty soon. If they get other ISPs on board the whole thing will become a fiasco and I for one would welcome it.

UPC will most likely buy a few boxes, trace everyone down and break some kneecaps

What is the source of this report? As i understood no-one had been able to extract the boxkey?
If true, they would be pretty stupid to announce it now, before the full N3 rollout has finnished.

True I suppose but it doesnt make it much harder to target. Its still likely a centralised setup.

Seemingly the version of Nagra 3 Rom card used is the same as on Cyfrowy in Poland.
I heard that the UPC cards can handle about 60-80 clients without any glitching so they are good for sharing.
The big servers ,like Starview 6 ,are using one card for every transponder on cable, thats 17 in total I think.
Could share to over 5000 receivers with that setup.
I cant see the Starview 6 server staying open very long though ,it will draw too much attention.

i can confirm that it is working but not glitch free as you will likely see from the above link to afterdawn, and yes it would be very silly indeed to have your internet from upc and have a starview6 cardshare on the same connection . its not hard to see someones ip address and track them . it would be interesting however to see if an emu was available at some stage for the dreambox .

I'd imagine UPC could easily block any suspected servers ip address.
