Hi from Ireland - 29-June-2010, 13:52

My current set up is a Manhattan Plaza 550 and a WinTV HVR-4000 in the PC and three satellite dishes. A 90cm dish picks up 28.2E, a transparent 85cm with two LNBs picks up 13E & 19.2E and the 3rd 1.25M dish picks up 1.0W.

I've had an interesting past experience of trying to pick up feeds such as from 26E, learning the hard way. Back ~2003, I picked up a second hand 1.8M dish, only to find it was no more effective than an 60cm due to being warped. Similar story later on when I picked up a used 1.6M dish and trying out all sorts of feedhorns, arms, etc. Finally, I went for a new 1.25M (Fracarro) and the Arab feeds I tried getting from 26E changed to a new satellite focussed over North Africa. Oops...

What originally got me into satellite was from around 2002 when I use to get my Internet access via satellite. My original provider used a "Fetch" service and provided me with a Skystar2 card. I would submit HTTP or FTP links for what I was interested in and once the provider obtained the files, it would send them to my PC via satellite. This provider later changed to a satellite based internet service, where it worked by getting the downlink via satellite and using a 56k modem for the uplink. It wasn't fast at ~300kbps (40KB/s typical), but certainly a lot better than just plain 56k dial-up, until I got DSL in 2005. I know the card could do far more than just receive data and used it for tuning in satellite broadcasts. Later on I replaced the card with a HVR-4000.

I'm now interested in giving card sharing a try on the PC after a friend referred me to this forum, so it's time to do some reading as this is completely new to me.
