Hi Folks!

I'm new to all this CAM/CI stuff so could use a good (and basic) tutorial.

I'm based in the UK and currently have a Sky STB. I would like to start using a Linux-based PVR (probably LinuxMCE, but if not, MythTV or VDR).

Current plan is to install a quad LNB and use my existing STB with a TV capture card on one feed and DVB-S cards on the other three for Freeview channels.

If I can, however, I'd prefer to get rid of the STB and use a DVB-S card to get the encrypted channels. If I can receive more than one such channel at the same time (i.e. utilize multiple DVB-S cards with my sky viewing card) then so much the better!

So, can anyone send me / point me at a good howto on this? I have medium-level Linux knowledge but basic pvr / media knowledge.

My apologies if this is too long for an introductory post or this is the wrong place to ask the question. There are so many forums, it's difficult to choose!

Many thanks

Thank you, guys!

Unfortunately, I'm such a noob to this stuff, that even some of the rules don't make sense!

#2 What is a "Sharing server"
#6 Ok I know what an IP address and DNS are, but what is a line?
#9 WHAT????? Where do I start with that one!!!
#14 Err.....
#15 .....

You get the idea! I don't want to get into trouble for accidentally violating rules I don't actually understand

So, as I said in my intro, can anyone point me at a "Cardsharing for Dummies" or "Idiots guide to CAM/CI" or whatever? The less prior knowledge it assumes, the better

Thank you, one and all

Hi Wierdbeard65,

I hope you found the info you need, and got better understanding on the entire concept of card sharing. If not, ask me. I know a thing or two ;-)

I see you are also active on the linuxmce.org website. I have been a lattent reader for several years now, and have looked into this matter very often. But never took the step to setup a box myself...

I remember I spoke with one of the engineers at reel-box. Just to get an idea on what the dvb-s config looked like. but that was bfore I got knowledge on card sharing.

Now I want to give it another go, and was wondering if you came any further with your project. The thing is that I don't want to reinvent the wheel. I am trying to find out if it can be done to combine the use of a LMCE box as a cerntral dvb-s centre, and to have the content streamed to other MD's.

Looks like there is not really a solution for running f.ex. a card reader setup a la Smargo on a LMCE, and work from there... But what if you connect the STB to your LMCE?

Anyway, I am thinking up loud now. That is why I was wondering, how did it work out for you?

Regards,

Harry The Satman
