App milestone highlights growing connected TV demand

Joseph O'Halloran | 05-12-2010

Two milestones announced by Samsung, in terms of the number of connected TV apps that it offers and the amount of downloads that they have attracted, are amply demonstrating the rising popularity of connected TV.

Specifically Samsung is celebrating the one millionth TV app download, from a store now comprising 200 such products, from the Smart TV Library less than a year after initial launch.

The library is claimed to be the world's first HDTV-based application stores and where the most popular downloads include Hulu Plus, ESPN Next Level and Texas Holdem. This says the company showcases the demand for entertainment experiences across key consumer hobby areas most notably sports, movies and gaming.
According to data from research firm The NPD Group, Samsung took over two-thirds of the US connected TV market in the first half of 2010, and Samsung Apps were present on more than half of its 2010 TV range. Looking forward, Samsung expects the market for Smart TVs in the US alone to reach 6.5 million units by the end of 2010 and anticipates demand will grow to 20 million units by 2012.

The evolution of television in recent years has been astounding as consumers seek technology that enhances their viewing experience, and their lives, said Mr. Boo-keun Yoon, President of Samsungs Visual Display Business. Integrating the traditional TV experience with applications and features like 3D bridges the gap between simply consuming programming and interacting with it. We are seeing that consumers are embracing these new experiences with their TVs.
