Apple HDTV impact to be slow

Apple's long-rumoured HDTV launch will happen next year, in the 42- to 55-inch range, but don't expect it to revolutionise the TV experience anytime soon.
That's the prediction of Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster. He said that he expects Apple to release a connected TV in 2013 that will cleave very close to existing functionality of other smart HDTVs, with content options that replicate the experience on Apple's existing Apple TV set-top box. For that reason, Apple's living-room foray will only cost between $1,500 and $2,000, not $3,000 and up as some have speculated, Munster predicts.
Apple will be incorporating Siri for content discoverability, the analyst added, and the company is working on an ecosystem for accessories.
That said, within five years, Apple will offer significant innovation over existing cable and satellite TV models within about five years, Munster added, leveraging cloud distribution to provide cloud-based DVR.
That's a move sure to present obstacles in the form of leery content companies, as is the other model that Munster expects Apple to pioneer: unbundled, pick-and-choose channel lineups for greater personalisation.
