Arte leads euro cross-media series The Spiral

Pascale Paoli-Lebailly | 24-08-2012

Franco-German channel Arte has initiated the first European cross-media mystery series, The Spiral, that combines traditional storytelling with gaming, online communities and audience involvement.

The Spiral is a five-part drama series following an equally international group of artists in Copenhagen who get entangled in a crime investigation after they decide to steal six major paintings simultaneously into six different euro museums.

The Arte cultural channel has teamed up with the six northern European pubcasters who have joined forces to produce this prime-time format which is set for broadcast as of 3 September.

It will be screened simultaneously on Arte France and Germany, VRT (Belgium), Vara (The Netherlands), SVT (Sweden), NRK (Norway) YLE, (Finland) and TV3 Denmark. The Spiral will also go to air into two further territories including Austria and the German speaking region of Switzerland, for a total of ten countries.

Simultaneous with the broadcasts, audiences in all participating territories will be able to discover the characters and the story through thespiral.eu, both game and community designed to enhance the story world of The Spiral. Internauts have already been able to follow the tracks of the stolen paintings and contribute to the creation of a collaborative virtual work.

This international coproduction has been piloted by producer Peter De Maegd for Brussels-based production company Caviar Films (The Emperor of Taste, King of the World), while Hans Herbots (The Divine Monster) was taken on as director.
