Astra, Intersat Set to Launch Satellite Service in Africa

Astra Broadband Services and Intersat Africa are set to launch satellite broadband to customers in East and Central Africa in early February, the companies announced Jan. 22.
The service, Get2Net, will be launched in countries such as Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi. Astra Broadband and Intersat also have agreed to expand the service offering in West African countries such as Nigeria, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Senegal and Guinea.

Intersat Africa is using the Astra2Connect broadband platform to market Get2Net. Customers will need a 100-centimeter antenna and a satellite modem and they are set to connect to the Internet regardless of their geographical location. Get2Net can also be used for VoIP telephony.
Get2Net will provide connectivity to underserved markets and rural Africa and will also enhance the service delivery offered by ISPs. It will help them overcome the limitations of terrestrial last mile connectivity and will be able to serve all customers irrespective of their geographical location.

Get2Net will also be used to power Intersat’s Rural Intenet Kiosk initiative by offering a real broadband experience to users in remote areas,” Intersat Africa CEO Abdul Bakhrani said in a statement.
