BBC 'makes $12bn' says report - 05-January-2010, 05:55

The BBC is hitting back at critics who say it should be reduced in size, and that its cost base is too cumbersome. A report, commissioned by the BBC from management consultants Deloitte says that the BBC earns billions for UK taxpayers.

According to The Guardian newspaper, the Deloitte report argues that a privatised BBC would lose the UK 4bn, and potentially make a negative impact on the independent TV production sector of some 1.4bn.

A new Tory government, if elected, is widely expected to target the BBC with cost-cutting measures, while pay-TV operator BSkyB (controlled by Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp) has also argued for a slimmed-down BBC.

A former director general of the BBC, Greg Dyke, is also working on an independent study which is expected to recommend scrapping the controversial licence fee tax, thus saving 100m a year. Dyke’s theory is that an annual government stipend would save the high cost of collecting the fee.
