BBC welcomes ITV move to MediaCity
Friday, December 17 2010, 09:34 GMT
By Andrew Laughlin,

The BBC has welcomed ITV's decision to join the corporation in relocating to the new MediaCityUK complex at Salford Quays.

Yesterday, ITV confirmed that it will move its northern operations to MediaCity in 2012, taking several floors of a building at the complex for production arm ITV Studios.

The broadcaster will also create a brand new set for flagship soap opera Coronation Street on a 7.7 acre site at Trafford Wharf, just adjacent to the Imperial War Museum North.

Next year, the BBC will begin its 877m move to MediaCity, including the corporation's sport, children's and learning departments, along with parts of Radio 5 Live

In a statement, BBC North director Peter Salmon welcomed ITV's decision to move to Salford Quays and said that it will add "momentum" to the BBC's relocation.

"We would like to offer a warm BBC welcome to our colleagues at ITV. They have just celebrated 50 remarkable years of Coronation Street and with this decision we can now work alongside each other to create iconic content for the future," he said.

"Their decision to move adds greater momentum as we prepare to open our doors for business next year at our new home at Salford and we look forward to supporting their plans to move and join us at MediaCityUK."

Earlier this week, BBC director general Mark Thompson refused to rule out the possibility of moving a BBC television channel, such as BBC One or BBC Two, to Salford Quays in the future.
