Belgacom TV passes 663,000 customers in Q309
30.10.09

Belgian telco Belgacom added 75,000 customers for its IPTV service 'Belgacom TV' in the third quarter of this year to reach 663,000 customers by the end of the period, with the company citing the launch of a multi-play pack (marketed under a 'Free TV' campaign) as one of the reasons for this solid growth.

The company also names its company-wide 'FAIR' programme, which seeks to address cable competition in Belgium, as another reason for the strong growth in its IPTV subscriber base. Belgacom reports that TV ARPU per household remained fairly stable over the past few quarters, even going up slightly to €20.60 in the third quarter of 2009 as a result of increased sales of set-top boxes and slightly higher usage of on-demand services. Revenue from IPTV services in the third quarter of this year rose 51.2% year-on-year to reach €94mn.

Belgacom has also been busily developing its 'Broadway' project, which aims to develop its VDSL2 and Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC) networks, and has required an investment of €34mn in the third quarter of this year. The project has delivered a population coverage of over 71%, and remains on track to reach the 80% mark by the middle of 2011, according to Belgacom.

Total revenues across all operations reached €4.472bn for the first nine months of this year, up 1% from the same period of last year, while net income for the period reached €617mn, a fall of €68mn from the same period of 2008, which is attributed mainly to a fine imposed by the Belgian Competition Authority.
