Brussels European Commission has outlawed France’s telecom tax voted through last year as one of the means to raise money to compensate France Télévisions for its partial advertising ban.
“This is an administrative burden not compatible with the European right,” the Commission said, opening an infringement proceeding against France.
Since March 2009, 0.9% of the total revenues of telcos go to France Télévisions to compensate it for the ad ban.
“This tax strikes one of the most dynamic sectors and there is great risk that it is supported by consumers,” added Viviane Reding, the commissioner for the information society and media.
