Chilean entrepreneur acquires UHF channel for TDT
The Chilean entrepreneur Álvaro Saieh acquired UHF 22 band frequency license for USD 2,5 millions, thus enabling him to participate in the TDT business with his own channel. At the beginning of 2010, Saieh acquired the 20% of VTR, the main cable operator in Chile, for USD 340 millions.
The acquisition of Más Canal 22, as currently called, was carried out through Copesa - Consorcio Periodístico de Chile (Journalist Consortium of Chile), a holding that controls national circulation newspapers, magazines and radio broadcasting stations. With this business, Saieh is getting ready to participate in the Chilean TDT market, which is still in its testing stage and waiting for specific legislation.
According to the local media, in March 2010, Saieh was interested in acquiring (jointly with the entrepreneur Andrònico Luksic) the Free-to-air broadcasting company Chilevisión, but finally decided not to because of the high price fixed by the owner of the channel, the Chilean President, Sebastián Piñera. Between 1993 and 1996, Saieh held the 25% of chares TV Channel La Red.
