Digital Plus opens VOD to Internet
From David Del Valle in Madrid
Spain’s digital DTH platform, Digital Plus, is opening up the VOD service, Videoclub, to all Internet users in an attempt to give a boost to its subscriptions.
For the first time the platform is launching a TV service for all Internet users. Digital Plus Videoclub, currently under trial, will allow Internet users to rent films and TV series for a period of 30 days and with a limit of 48 hours from the moment viewing starts. Around 400 titles will be available in May with prices ranging from E1.99 in standard definition (E2.99 in HD) for a TV series to E3.99 (E4.99 in HD) for a recently-released film.
Likewise, Digital Plus has also launched its TV a la carte service that allows its subscribers to have access to a wide catalogue of past TV content for free. For the service, the company has designed a new interface with SD channels using 2 Megabytes per second and HDTV channels, 4 Megabytes. The service is available through the set-top-box iPlus, able to store up to 200 hours of standard format broadcasting (100 hours in HDTV). The IPlus device is already in more than 350,000 homes with plans to reach the half a million mark by the end of the year.
