Doctor Who documentary climbs into the Tardis for 50th anniversary

Editor | 10-08-2012

To mark the 50th anniversary of beloved sci-fi fixture Doctor Who, BBC Two will air a docudrama on the history of the show, sometime in 2013.

An Adventure in Space and Time, a 90-minute special, will go back to the heady days of the early sixties to tell the tale of how the story of the Time Lord came to be. Doctor Who was first broadcast on 23 November 1963 as a four-part serial entitled An Unearthly Child.
"This is the story of how an unlikely set of brilliant people created a true television original," writer Mark Gatiss told the BBC. "I've wanted to tell this story this for more years than I can remember! To make it happen for Doctor Who's 50th birthday is quite simply a dream come true."
Steven Moffat, Doctor Who's executive producer, said in a statement that "The story of Doctor Who is the story of television - so it's fitting in the anniversary year that we make our most important journey back in time to see how the Tardis was launched."
Gatiss added that the documentary would also follow the trajectory of the original Doctor Who, William Hartnell, whi went from action hero roles to becoming a lovable children's hero.
