Ericsson provices HD video processing systems for NBC’s coverage of the Vancouver Winter Games
Monday, 22 February 2010
NBC Universal is broadcasting the Vancouver Olympic Winter Games for the first time entirely in HD, covering over 100 million households in the US. More than 835 hours of sports will be available for US viewers from February 12 to 28. This is the most total hours ever for a Winter Olympics, more than the last two Winter Olympics combined, and the most live hours ever for a Winter Games.
Ericsson (NASDAQ:ERIC) is providing video encoding solutions to NBC. Ericsson also has technical staff onsite in Vancouver and New York to secure technical perfection.
"The exceptional picture quality of Ericsson's contribution and distribution products is sure to please our most demanding viewers," said Dave Mazza, Senior Vice President of Engineering, NBC Olympics. "Having worked closely with Ericsson at previous Winter and Summer Games, we knew that we could count on them to deliver an advanced solution for our most ambitious winter coverage plans ever."
"Those of us watching are amazed by the outstanding picture quality, the abundance of coverage and the ability to view online, also in HD, what we might have missed live," said Staffan Pehrson, Head of Solution Area TV, Ericsson.
Ericsson encoding solutions were used by NBC Olympics for the 2008 Beijing Games and the 2006 Winter Olympics from Torino, Italy.
NBC is deploying a variety of Ericsson products including MPEG-4 AVC HD encoders, professional receiver/decoders, multiplexers, modulators, IP adapters and high availability control and management systems. The Ericsson systems are compressing NBC's HD content into both contribution and distribution feeds to support the highest picture quality from venue to viewer.
