Eutelsat showcases 3D
Chris Forrester

Eutelsat will be demonstrating its portfolio of 3D programming (also available to viewers from Eutelsats EuroBird 9 satellite) at IBC this coming weekend. Eutelsat is transmitting almost 100 HDTV channels to various European markets, but sees 3D as representing a new viewing revolution.

In order to support a full appreciation of the assets of 3D, Eutelsat has been broadcasting an all-3D channel throughout 2009, using capacity on its EuroBird 9A satellite which provides pan-European coverage. Together with its partners, OpenSky and dbw Communication, Eutelsat is organising a series of prestigious out-of-home 3D music and cultural events for viewers in cinemas and public locations in Europe.

But theres more to Eutelsats IBC line-up besides 3D and HDTV, and the two key projects concern Ka-band transmissions. Later next year Eutelsat will be launching Ka-Sat, a new concept for European viewers and broadband users. This first fully-dedicated multi-spotbeam Ka-band satellite in Europe will reduce the cost per bit by eight-fold. Services for up to two million homes in greater Europe will be possible offering 10 Mbps downstream and 1 Mbps in upstream. Ka-Sat will also be optimised for other services including regional and local TV.

Hand-in-hand with the new satellite is the consumer reception equipment, which everyone realises has to be low-cost and affordable for mass-market take-up. Eutelsat (and partner ViaSat) will be exhibiting their Tooway receivers. The service is already up and running and now available in over 20 European countries including France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Spain and the UK.
