Foxtel to fend off Netflix with new triple-play offer

Editor | 02-12-2013

With competition from the over-the-top industrys 800lb-gorilla imminent, leading Australian operator Foxtel is to launch broadband and fixed-line telephony services bundled with its TV product.

Following approval by its shareholders Telstra and News Australia, and the execution of a wholesale agreement with Telstra, Foxtel is hoping to defend its territory before Netflix makes Oz OTT hot by concluding negotiations with local content rights holders.
Under the terms of the new service bundles, Foxtel will be able to offer fixed-line broadband and telephony services nationally on both Telstra's ADSL network and the National Broadband Network (NBN) as it is progressively deployed. The services such as Foxtel Play, Foxtel Go, and the brand new online and on-demand movie service Presto will also be delivered by the soon-to-launch broadcast and IP-enabled iQ3 set-top box.
The result of all this, says Foxtel, is that users will gain from competitive propositions with bundle discounts, have unmetered access to Foxtel's range of IP services such as Foxtel Go and On Demand when they use it through their home broadband connection, have the convenience of one source of customer care and technical support, and experience easy switching and installation of solutions.
"This is a transformative event for the Foxtel business, said Foxtel CEO Richard Freudenstein. It will enable us to greatly enhance the breadth, quality and value of the services we offer to customers while opening up significant opportunities for growth. International experience demonstrates that triple-play and broadband bundles have been hugely popular with consumers and have allowed operators to boost take-up of subscription TV services.
However, opening up an opportunity for rivals, Foxtel also revealed that services aren't expected to launch until late 2014.
