French viewing hours up in 2012

Pascale Paoli-Lebailly | 08-01-2013

French TV viewing time increased by three minutes in 2012 to reach three hours and 50 minutes compared to three hours and 47 minutes in 2011, according to Mdiamtrie's survey Mdiamat Annuel.

This figure includes all viewers over four years of age, but the survey points out that kids in the four to 14 demo watched TV three minutes less each day (two hours 15 minutes) last year than in 2011.

Regarding audience shares, Mdiamtrie confirms figures released by TV channels last week: TF1 fell from 23.7% to 22.7% but remained the leader among French TV channels. Pubcasters France 2 and France 3 remained stable at 14.7% and 9.7% audience shares respectively, while France 5 went up to 3.5% compared to 3.3% in 2010. RTL Group's M6 increased to 11.2% up from 10.8% in 2011. Arte also improved its audience share to 1.8% against 1.5% the year before.

Public group France Tlvisions, which also includes France O and France 4, claims in a statement that its global audience share went up 0.4% and it remains top of the French TV groups, totalling 30.3% audience share. FTV's catch-up TV Pluzz had over 56 million views in 2012.

Over 2012, the French-German cultural channel Arte, which revamped its schedules in early 2012, increased its audience by 20%. Arte's websites attracted 8.3 million visits. Arte+7 generated 5.6 million video requests each month against 3.2 million in 2011.

Contrary to the public channels, pay-TV channel Canal+ fell to 2.9% compared to a 3.1% audience share in 2011.
