German broadcasters criticise YouTube

Jrn Krieger | 12-08-2012

The development of YouTube into an online video store has enraged German TV broadcasters against the Google subsidiary.
"YouTube acts increasingly aggressive and beyond our regulatory framework," Conrad Albert, executive board member of TV group ProSiebenSat.1, told German news magazine Der Spiegel.

YouTube started offering full-length movies in German language recently. The line-up is still small, but will be expanded. The broadcasters' anger is also based on the recent court interdiction of the video portal jointly planned by ProSiebenSat.1 and RTL.

"It's absurd. Everyone is loudly asking for user-friendly offerings - but exactly this is prohibited for us to Google's advantage which will obviously know how to fill the gap," said Tobias Schmid, head of media politics, at RTL.
Another reason for resentment is YouTube's plan to launch its own channels. The platform currently courts German TV producers to provide exclusive programmes which will be commercialised by YouTube.
Taking part in the tender is production company Endemol, among other parties, according to the report. Brainpool is apparently thinking about setting up a comedy channel while Constantin has said "no": "At least for the time being, this would not be viable for us, but we remain in talks," said managing director Martin Moszkowicz.
