Google has started offering movies on its media portal Google Play in Germany. Internet users can access the films on demand in full length for a fee.
The movies are provided by Hollywood studios and German producers and distributors such as Walt Disney, Paramount Pictures, Universal Pictures, Sony Pictures, Senator Film, Universum Film, Atlas Film, Prokino and Wildbunch.
Access is through a PC, laptop or mobile using a smartphone or tablet PC equipped with Google's operating system Android. After pressing the 'play' button, users have 48 hours to watch the film. New releases are available from €3.99 and older titles from €2.99. The HD versions cost a surcharge of €1.
Up until now Google Play only offered apps, games and e-books in Germany. With the expansion into an online movie library, Google will get into competition with established video-on-demand providers such as iTunes (Apple), maxdome (ProSiebenSat.1), LOVEFiLM (Amazon) and Videoload (Deutsche Telekom).
