Internet company Google will introduce its Google TV box in Germany in conjunction with electronics manufacturer Sony. The device which takes internet content to the TV set will become available in retail stores in mid-September 2012.
The Google TV box – to be sold for €199 – will be connected to the TV set through an HDMI cable and hooked up to the internet through Wi-Fi or an Ethernet line. On the TV screen, users will be able to choose between offerings known from the internet, for example movies, videos or games.
Like with smartphones, access is through apps. The line-up will include YouTube, Google Play, Google Chrome, Facebook and Twitter among other services.
The Google TV box which is based on Google's operating system Android has been available in the USA for two years, but without much demand. The reason: The large TV broadcasters refuse to cooperate with Google as they fear that the company could take away advertising revenues from them.
