IBC 2012: Brightcove boosts VOD, transcoding announces commercial availability for Widevine

Editor | 08-09-2012

Brightcove has launched new on demand and transcoding systems designed to transform and streamline the video encoding workflow as well as making the commercial availability of Widevine digital rights management technology.

The VOD and transcoding solutions are attributed with being able to overcome the complexity and cost associated with encoding and streaming live events to multiple screens and so its Zencoder Instant Play can enable on-demand video playback to start just seconds after the begin of a file upload. Complementing this capability is Zencoder Live Cloud Transcoding which is designed to provide an alternative to on-location live encoding hardware and dedicated uplink bandwidth.

In the realm of DRM, Television New Zealand and LG Electronics have been revealed as being among the first customers to take advantage of the Brightcove Video Cloud integrated with Widevine security. Cloud-based Widevine DRM is now incorporated into the Video Cloud media asset ingestion process and so Brightcove can assure delivery and playback on more than 539 million Widevine-enabled consumer electronics devices worldwide, 284 million of which are televisions, Blu-ray players, set-top boxes and game consoles. Brightcove became the first online video platform to join and complete the comprehensive Certified Widevine Implementation Partner programme.

As a broadcaster holding a significant amount of acquired content, DRM solutions are critical to our ability to securely deliver key content to the endpoints where our viewers want us to be, explained Richard Beniston, Online Product Manager at Television New Zealand. The Widevine/Video Cloud solution enables us to extend our service to a number of crucial connected devices, and Brightcove has demonstrated a clear understanding that cross-platform DRM is an integral piece of the puzzle for us.

For its part, LG Electronics is using Brightcoves Widevine integration with Video Cloud to bolster its premium content initiatives. LG is increasing the amount of high-quality premium video content on the LG Connected TV platform in direct response to consumer demand, added Young-jae Seo, vice president of the service division of LGs Smart Business Center. Brightcoves integration of Widevine with Video Cloud seamlessly automates the complicated processes associated with digital rights management, allowing us to securely deliver content and protect our content partnerships.
