India propels worldwide satellite TV market

The worldwide market for pay-Direct-to-Home (DTH) satellite television increased significantly last year, with an estimated 18 per cent rise in subscriptions, says market research firm In-Stat. The primary reason for this increase was strong growth in the Indian market, which more than doubled to about 90 lakh subscribers at the end of 2008, reports In-Stat.

India now has five pay DTH satellite providers with a sixth expected to enter the market early in 2009, says Mike Paxton, In-Stat analyst. This includes Dish TV, Tata Sky, Reliance Big TV, Sun Direct, Bharti Airtel and Videocom as the sixth to launch DTH service soon.

Paxton adds that he expects a large number of satellite set top boxes (STBs) to be sourced from Indian consumer electronics manufacturers that will provide them with opportunities to expand their businesses in the STB market.

Additionally, in the Asia/Pacific region, China is likely to introduce a pay DTH satellite service in 2009 or 2010, which will help sustain strong growth in Asia, says Paxton.

According to In-Stats recent research report titled Worldwide Digital Satellite Pay TV Market 2008″, there will be nearly 20 crore DTH pay-TV subscribers worldwide by 2012. Worldwide revenues will eclipse Rs.7.09 lakh crore ($142.7 billion) by 2011.
