Discovery hops on to New TV wagon

Rose Major

Discovery has launched its high-definition channel, Discovery HD, in Taiwan, as part of Taiwan Fixed Networks new IPTV platform, New TV. The channel launches along with four standard-definition offerings from Discoverys suite of multichannels.

Also available on the platform are Discovery Science, Discovery Home & Health and Discovery Turbo. The whole Discovery package costs NT$200 a month (US$6),with Discovery HD also available as part of New TVs HD package at the same price.

TFNs IPTV platform is backed by a NT$1 billion (US$30 million) investment and the company wants New TV to become one of Taiwans top three pay-TV operators over the next three years. TFN itself is one of Taiwans largest broadband network providers.

Harvery Chang, president and chief executive office, TWN Broadband, said: We have aggressively expanded the entertainment portion of our business and have become the leader of digital convergence in Taiwan. The launch of New TV will not only bring about brand new entertainment experiences for Taiwanese viewers, but will also help with advancements in the convergence of digital media content and communications industries. Discovery is very popular in Taiwan and we believe that their high quality content will help New TV gain new ground in the digital entertainment platform.

Tommy Lin, senior vice president and general manager, North Asia, Discovery Networks Asia-Pacific said: Discovery is delighted to be further expanding our services in Taiwan and offering our audiences here with more options and high-quality entertainment we are known for. Each channel provides our viewers with the best nonfiction content there is whether you're watching it in spectacular detail through the technologies of high-definition, or learning something new about science.
