Harmonic grows, and grows

Chris Forrester

Harmonic, one of the most-recognised names in digital TV, is celebrating new growth numbers. Of course, when one has absorbed another well-known name (Scopus) during the past year the numbers had better go up! And they have, but one can expect a counter-offensive from Tandberg any moment now.

The headline claims that Harmonic now leads the digital encoding market. Using data from InStat, Harmonic says it now has a 28% market share. In 2008, Harmonic shipped more than 12,000 encoding channels to broadcast, cable, satellite and telecom video service providers, says the release.

Around the world, more than 60,000 MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 AVC (H.264) standard and high definition video channels have been provisioned using Harmonics DiviCom encoders since 1996. Eight of the 10 largest direct-to-home (DTH) satellite operators worldwide and nine of the top 10 cable operators in the United States use Harmonic encoders. Harmonic compression solutions also power more than 6,500 telco IPTV channels around the world, and over 300 TV stations in the United States broadcast their digital TV programs using Harmonic encoders, enthuses InStat.

Even in todays challenging economic environment, both MPEG-2 and AVC HD services continue to grow, as does conversion of the contribution and primary distribution segments to AVC, said Michelle Abraham, In-Stats principal analyst for Converging Markets and Technologies, Multimedia. Harmonic has consistently held a strong leadership position in MPEG-2 and AVC, and was the top encoder vendor in 2008. We expect their position to grow even stronger in 2009 following their recent acquisition of Scopus with the addition of the Ellipse contribution and distribution encoders to their solution portfolio.
