LaSexta asks for pay-DTT channel

Iaki Ferreras

13-04-2009

Mediapro's laSexta - ideologically the closest to Spains government has already put in its request for a licence to be able to broadcast a pay-DTT channel before next summer.

The government just last week indicated it was likely to allow payTV services on the countrys DTT spectrum. LaSexta will ask permission to broadcast Mediapro's Gol TV channel, a sports channel carrying Spanish soccer matches including Spain's Soccer League and the King's Soccer Cup. At present Gol TV is provisionally broadcast through different pay TV operators.

Gol TV is produced by Mediapro and would occupy the frequency now occupied by laSextas thematic DTT channel Hogar 10. However, Hogar 10 will return to DTT in-the-clear - as now - after national analogue switch over.

Gol TV's broadcasts would not affect laSexta's present sports programming since it will continue to offer sports events such as Formula 1 motor racing, the Spanish Soccer League for the rest of the present season and Poland's Eurobasket 2009.

The legal proccess laSexta's management will follow to be able to get Gol TV's pay DTT licence will be the same as Sogecable's Canal+ Spain licence. The channel is being replaced by free-to-air channel Cuatro which replaced Canal+ in the terrestrial frequency.
