NBC Universal still expanding in Germany

US media company NBC Universal plans to launch further TV channels in Germany to join existing pay-TV services 13th Street and Sci Fi, as it continues with expansion plans despite the global downturn.

We will expand our channel portfolio in Germany, Katharina Behrends, managing director of NBC Universal Global Networks Deutschland, told German financial newspaper Handelsblatt.

The company is currently in talks about establishing a German version of its womens channel Diva, the paper reports quoting industry insiders. The creation of an internationally successful womens channel such as Diva is an option for us, Behrends confirmed.

Diva, which launched on 1 October 2007 in the UK, shows popular talk-shows such as The Oprah Winfrey Show and US series like The Bold and the Beautiful, amongst other programmes.

In Germany, NBC Universal currently operates pay-TV services 13th Street and Sci Fi as well as in conjunction with AETN International History and The Biography Channel. The company also holds a German broadcasting licence for the Crime & Investigation Network.

The last thematic TV channel for women in Germany, TM3, was revamped into quiz-TV channel 9Live in summer 2001 due to insufficient success amongst its target audience. Since January 2008, 9Live has been screening a daily window for women under the title neun TV with little success, so far.
