Over 60% of Spain DTT adapted

A total of 479,000 Spanish buildings are still to be adapted for DTT reception, with 61.8% already adapted.

According to association Impulsa TDT among 1,287 towns belonging to Phase I of the National DTT Transition Plan there are still 65,000 buildings to be adapted to digital. That means 70% of collective buildings would not get TV signals when the analogue signal is switched off in those regions in less than eight months on June 30, 2009.

Andrs Armas, Impulsa TDT's general director, said: "these figures mean for the total digital adaptation the rhythm of interventions should be around 370 and 380 daily buildings. Although this rhythm of activity could look high it's absolutely possible providing it's made in a progressive way and within an order."

So Impulsa TDT thinks it's "essential" in the few months remaining until June 2009 that the adaptation rate accelerates in order to adapt those collective antennas which need to be adapted specially those towns belonging to phase I.

The report also highlights that the number of homes getting DTT signals amounts to around 6.7 million which allows 9 million people to connect to the new television on a daily basis, gaining an audience share of 18.3%.

Moreover if to the digital homes we add those getting DTT contents by means of other ways such as cable, DSL TV or satellite, at the end of June there were already more than 8 million homes with the possibility of watching DTT. After the last summer this figure is likely to have reached 9.5 million homes.

As for sales of DTT boxes, during September there were 546,000 DTT receivers sold making a total of 13 million sales of which 7 million units are integrated receivers in TV sets or DVDs. However in the next few months the association hopes the sales of external DTT boxes will speed up.

Impulsa TDT foresees DTT penetration will reach 40% at the end of next year and that there will be 15 million digital decoders sold by then.
