Sky News promises HD

Chris Forrester

Sky News will go HD next spring. This is good news for all HD fans as numerous examples from HDTV news broadcasters around the world admit that the extra detail supplied by high-definition images conveys extra realism to news and current affairs programming.

Skys commitment to HD must be praised. The one-year delay is because Skys Osterley HQ has to be upgraded. It will be the first UK news channel to broadcast in HD, bringing together first-class journalism with the sharpest picture quality to bring viewers even closer to domestic and international news, says Sky.

The commitment to launch Sky News HD follows the channels successful first ever HD broadcast and HD online streaming of Barack Obamas Inauguration in January 2009 and, from launch, Sky News will bring HD pictures to viewers from around the globe as experienced HD cameramen work alongside the channels world class UK and foreign correspondents, says Sky.

Sky News HD will launch in Spring 2010 once its headquarters in West London have been upgraded to provide an HD broadcast capability. In addition, work will also be carried out in some of Sky News busiest bureaux in the UK and overseas to support HD production.
