Telefonica Latino tops 1.6m subs

Chris Forrester

Spains Telefonica has reached 1.6m subscribers for its Latin American operation. Serving viewers in Peru, Chile, Colombia, Brazil and Venezuela, Telefonica reported a net increase of 75,500 new subs, lower than expected but taking the overall picture to 1.6m, up 30.2% on the same period last year.

TV Telco Latam reports that from December 2008 to March 2009, Telefnica-Telecom Colombia recorded 3,300 new users; at present, 145,000 [subs] are recorded, a 56.5% increase if compared to March 2008. Cablemgico, CATV's subsidiary in Peru, again yielded the lowest growth rate, recording just a 7.5% increase over the year. From December 2008 to March 2009, the company recorded 26,400 clients and achieved 680,900 overall pay-TV subs.

Telesp, its Brazilian subsidiary, recorded the highest pay-TV subscriber growth, which accounted for a 77.9% increase over the last year and reached 502,400 clients. However, such growth was much lower than the 104.5% increase recorded between December 2007 and December 2008. From December to March this year, Telesp recorded just 30,200 new subscribers.

In October last year, Telefnica launched DTH in Venezuela and so far, 23,400 have signed up; 8,500 new subs were recorded in December 2008. In Chile, the company lost 200 clients: in March 2009, 262,800 were recorded compared to 263,000 in December 2008.

In Spain, Telefnica's IPTV service, Imagenio, also reduced its base: 604,800 users were recorded whereas, at the end of 2008, the platform had 612,500 clients.
