Italian government seeks DTT spectrum tender review
20 Jan 11 -
The Italian government has asked the country’s Council of State to review plans to put digital terrestrial broadcasting frequencies to tender. Industry minister Paolo Romani is seeking clarity on reciprocity conditions and clarification on whether companies based in non-EU countries can participate in bidding for the frequencies.
Romani denied that the move was part of an attempt to delay the process. Sky Italia, the pay TV rival to commercial broadcaster Mediaset, controlled by the family of prime minister Silvio Berlusconi, is seeking to acquire digital-terrestrial frequencies to extend the reach of its services.
The latest request for a review follows an earlier request for a review of rules on foreign companies taking part, but this was rejected by the Council of State as lacking clarity.
