Kabel Deutschland offers quadruple play

Germanys largest cable operator, Kabel Deutschland (KDG), has commenced offering mobile phone tariffs. With Mobile Phone and Mobile Internet, cable customers can make calls on their mobiles and surf the internet through a UMTS stick with their laptops without monthly fees.

A special feature of the new service is that all calls to other customers of KDGs fixed line and mobile tariffs are free. Calls to other fixed line or mobile numbers within Germany cost 0.15 per minute, while an SMS costs 0.15. For 4.99 per month a flat rate for telephony for all calls to German fixed lines is available. Mobile internet access, with a data rate for downloads of up to 3.6 Mbit/s and up to 384 kbit/s for uploads, is available for 1.99 per individual day with the tariff Day Flat. The UMTS stick for laptops costs 69.95.

The services are provided through the mobile network of O2 Germany, a KDG spokeswoman explained. It was rumoured in March that KDG plans a partnership with the subsidiary of Spanish telco Telefnica.

KDG is the first cable operator in Germany to offer a quadruple-play package of TV, internet, fixed line and mobile telephony, thereby stepping up competition with ADSL providers such as United Internet, Arcor, HanseNet and NetCologne, which are already offering mobile phone tariffs in combination with broadband internet access.
