London 2012 to be 'making of' 3D TV
Monday, March 7 2011, 11:42 GMT
By Andrew Laughlin,

The London 2012 Olympic Games will be the "making of" 3D television, despite the fact that sport fans prefer the high definition viewing experience, a new report has claimed.

According to research conducted for the third annual Global Sports Forum in Barcelona, almost two thirds (58%) of people in the UK consider HD to be the medium of choice to watch sport.

Less than a third (30.9%) of UK sport fans surveyed said that they have invested in 3D TV. However, the report indicated that 62% are considering upgrading in order to watch 3D coverage of London 2012.

Surprisingly, gymnastics is the sport most people (42%) are looking forward to seeing in 3D at the Games, followed by sprinting events (33%) and diving (29%).

The report also indicated that 74% of Brits turn to the web every week to follow their favourite sports, using news sites, social networks and live online streaming. Three quarters of people also expect to increase their consumption of online sport over the next decade.

Lucien Boyer, from the Global Sports Forum, said: "It has been eye-opening to take a look at the way that sports fans currently prefer to interact with their passions, and how this looks set to change in the future.

"If the results are anything to go by then shops had better start stocking up on 3D televisions well in advance of next year's Olympics to meet the anticipated demand - not least for the gymnastics events!"

Last September, the BBC ran live broadcast tests of 3D and Super High Definition - 16 times sharper than normal HD - with the aim of using the technologies for its coverage of the London 2012 Olympics.
