Many buildings still unadapted in Spain

Spain's DTT implementation is not moving as quickly as the government would have the population believe, as it pushes for analogue switch off in April 2010 or perhaps even earlier, according to the recent government wishes.

The fact is that there are still 329,400 buildings to be adapted to DTT according to DTT development and implementation association Impulsa TDT. The study says that DTT shares is 40.2% while the analogue television share is 38.9%, both on a national level.

The analysis also highlights that in June, Spanish citizens bought 842,000 new pieces of DTT equipment, a figure which is 17% higher than the sales of the last 12 months. The figure confirms the trend in upward penetration of equipment in Spanish homes.

Besides, the report says more than 96% of the country's population has DTT coverage and also 73.7% of buildings with collective antennas are ready for the new television. The total figure of buildings with collective antennas adapted to the requirements of DTT amounts to 777,600 which, added to the 145,700 new buildings that already fulfill the law of common infrastructures, equals 73.7% of adapted buildings.

The region where DTT penetration is highest is the Canary Islands where 78.7% of homes already have DTT. Urban areas where the population is dense also have a high percentage of DTT penetration, such as Madrid and Catalua.
