NBA face-off between Heat and Thunder goes down a storm

Editor RapidTVNews | 18-06-2012

The battle between one of the most expensively put together basketball teams against the man who told the world he was taking his talents to Miami has become the most viewed NBA finals on US broadcaster ABC.

According to data released by sports broadcaster ESPN, the first two games in the Miami Heat versus the Oklahoma City Thunder has averaged a record busting average of 16.439 million viewers (P2+), according to Nielsen with Game 2 on 14 June 2012 delivering on the night, just like Le Bron James, the largest audience for an NBA Finals Game 2 in ABC history, averaging 16.67 million viewers.

Overall, says ESPN, the play-off is averaging a 10.1 rating, the highest since 2004 and the second highest-rated ever on ABC, through two games. The series is up 10% in household rating (10.1 vs. 9.2) and 7% in viewership compared with 2011. Game 2 alone recorded a 10.4 household rating, making it the highest-rated since 2004 and the second-highest rated ever on ABC. That game which saw the Heat burn out the Thunder was up 12% in household rating , 7% in viewership and 11% in household impressions compared to last year.

Intriguingly, ESPN also revealed just how much non-mainstream channels were also being used. Game 2 of The Finals on ABC, live through special simulcasts on ESPN3, logged an average minute audience of 97,629 across computers, smartphones and tablets via WatchESPN and through ESPN on Xbox LIVE. It generated 319,316 unique viewers and 16.7 million minutes across platforms, up 41% and 49%, respectively, compared with to the average NBA Playoff game this season.
