ABC launches digital radio stations

Rose Major

Australias new DAB+ digital radio platform received a boost yesterday with the launch of public broadcaster the ABCs suite of digital stations, and a free-to-air TV ad campaign which is sure to boost awareness of the new platform.

The ABC is offering three new music stations ABC Dig Music, ABC Jazz and ABC Country as well as simulcasts of its existing radio stations which include ABC Classic FM and Radio National. Also available while the tournament is on is a special ABC Grandstand sport channel, dedicated to ball-by-ball coverage of the Ashes cricket series (England v Australia).

ABC Digital radio also offers the opportunity for alternative programming choices on networks such as ABC NewsRadio during parliamentary session broadcasts and special event concert broadcasts from youth station Triple J and ABC Classic FM.

Noting the historic significance of the event, ABC Managing Director Mark Scott said The ABC sees digital radio as an opportunity to provide Australians with new content and more content, and to further enrich the media experience ABC audiences enjoy. With the success of iView and ABC Mobile behind us, with digital radio starting today and the new kids channel ABC3 ahead at Christmas, the ABC is continuing to reach more Australians in more ways than ever before.

Commercial radio stations already launched their digital radio stations during June. The platform is available only in five mainland state capitals of Perth, Adelaide, Melbourne, Brisbane and Sydney.
