Astra satisfied with internet via satellite

Jrn Krieger

Two years after the launch of its internet via satellite service Astra2Connect, satellite operator SES Astra has seen a positive development with the offer being used by more than 40,000 end-consumers and around 10,000 new customers now signing up per quarter.

The service, aimed at households in regions without or with only insufficient broadband access via ADSL or cable, is currently available in 14 European countries, including Germany, the UK, France, Italy and Spain. In Germany, more than 1,000 towns and villages are still lacking fast internet access, despite the government’s broadband strategy aiming to enable all households to receive broadband access by the end of 2010.

Meanwhile, SES Astra has informed communal representatives in under-supplied regions of ten federal states about the advantages of internet via satellite during information events. “More than 250 decision makers who have taken part in these events have shown us that broadband access in rural regions is still a big problem,” said Volker Leyendecker, sales manager at Astra Broadband Services. “Without internet access via satellite nationwide broadband deployment in Germany is not factually possible, nor can the use of the digital dividend for the creation of broadband networks via terrestrial frequencies guarantee complete coverage.”

Astra2Connect offers nationwide, instantly available internet access with flat rate tariffs. Telephony (VoIP) and TV reception are also possible. Distribution partners in Germany are Deutsche Telekom, Filiago and StarDSL.
