Aussie kids: more internet, less TV
Australian children’s internet use has increased an astounding 50% since 2005, partly at the expense of television watching, according to new research from Roy Morgan.
The survey, Young Australians Survey – Time Spent Report, found that hours of TV watched per week fell from 15.6 hours in 2005 to 14.6 hours in 2008, while total internet time went up from 4.0 hours to 6.2 hours. Hours spent with computer or other electronic games rose from 4.1 hours to 4.3 hours, while radio consumption fell from 3.1 hours To 2.5 hours.
Hours spent playing sport and playing with friends were largely steady.
Norman Morris, Roy Morgan’s Industry Communications Director, says: “While much has been made of the fact that children today are less active and more TV focussed than they used to be, research proves that this is not the case. Kids are spending similar amounts of time using media and engaging in sport as they used to, but the activities and the media have changed.”
Findings were gleaned from interviews with more than 20,000 Australians 6 — 13 years old, over more than 4 years of ongoing research. The survey covers media consumption, behaviour, finances and attitudes.
