BSkyB Reports Quarterly Gains

British Sky Broadcasting, the U.K./Irish satellite TV company controlled by Rupert Murdoch's News Corp., reported Thursday that it netted 92,000 customers during its fiscal fourth quarter, for a total of to 8.98 million

BSkyB said gross product sales totaled more than 1.2 million in the fourth quarter. That growth included 321,000 net subscribers for the Sky-Plus DVR service, for a final tally of 3.714 million, and 33,000 net additions for the company's high-def services, for a total of 498,000.

Sky also reported broadband net growth totaling 200,000, for a final count of 1.628 million, and voice service gains of about 146,000, for a quarter-ending count of 1.241 million.

In a statement, BSkyB Chief Executive Jeremy Darroch said the company continues to grow strongly in an increasingly difficult consumer environment. More customers are choosing Sky for a broader range of products and are staying with their services for a longer period of time, he said.

"While there is much uncertainty around the consumer environment, there remains good headroom for profitable growth in our core sectors," Darroch said. "We are well equipped to meet customers' demands for quality, choice and value, and we have a strong financial model to deliver growth and returns."
