Comcast planning IPTV project codenamed 'Excalibur

Share US cable giant Comcast is planning an IPTV and video convergence project codenamed 'Excalibur', according to Light Reading's Cable Digital News.

While no details on the project have been officially released, the report quotes sources familiar with the project as saying that the MSO's aim is to develop a 'services overlay' that would put all IP services, including video, into a common provisioning and management system. The same sources also say that the project - which is believed to be near the top of Comcast's priority list - will use a form of digital rights management (DRM) for content security.

According to the reports, Comcast is expected to use Excalibur to help it pursue an IPTV strategy that includes personalised, unicast video services, although QAM-based video will still play a role for "years to come". Industry sources are reported as saying that around 100 employees are involved with Excalibur, with Comcast Interactive Capital and founding partner Sam Schwartz heading up the project.

The 'odinjobs' beta site lists three recent Comcast job postings (here) for Excalibur - a lead architect, a system administration support consultant to support the 'Excalibur Content Ingest Team', and a procurement lead.
