Discovery wraps Euro-deals

Chris Forrester

Documentary specialist Discovery has signed up a number of programming blocks with European broadcasters.

German commercial channel Kabel Eins, owned by ProSiebenSat.1 Media AG, has renewed its Discovery Channel branded block agreement through 2009. Consisting of 50 hours of content per year, the weekly branded block on is called K1 Discovery and features the best of Discoverys programming across a wide variety of genres, including science, technology, engineering, history and current events. This year marks the fifth consecutive year that K1 Discovery is part of the Kabel Eins schedule. Upcoming programs on the block include Extreme Engineering, Man Made Marvels and Weaponology.

Discovery has also signed a new program block agreement with RTL, one of the leading broadcasters in Croatia. The Discovery Channel branded block, which will broadcast through June 2009, airs weekly and includes 30 hours from such hit series as Storm Chasers, Man Vs. Wild, Hazard Pay, and Everest: Beyond the Limit. This deal has been extended to incorporate a DVD/Home Video licensing agreement with RTL and Net Zagreb in Croatia, where RTL will also promote Discovery DVD titles in the market.

Digital channel Barrandov TV, which launched earlier this year in the Czech Republic, has also signed on to include a Discovery Channel branded block as part of its line-up. The deal includes over 38 hours of content ranging from Europes Richest People to Austin Stevens: Snakemaster. Barrandov TV is owned by Moravia Steel, Inc.

In addition, Discovery recently renewed its branded block agreement in Poland with TV4. This deal will run until the end of June and the slot is called "4 Discovery", airing Saturdays at 18:00. The block consists of 16 hours of shows such as Baby Mammoth, Future Car and Apocalypse How.
