New evidence for iPad Mini surfaces

Michelle Clancy | 02-09-2012

More evidence that Apple will soon launch an "iPad Mini" has surfaced via app developer Marco Arment, who recently discovered new device profiles accessing the Instapaper online text reader and bookmarking app.

The new devices are coded as the "iPad2,5" and "iPad2,6," but the known identifier for the existing iPad 2 is "iPad2,4," indicating that these are never-before seen versions of the gadget, which is said to be the basis for the allegedly upcoming smaller version of the video-friendly iPad.
"It's a textbook Tim Cook supply-chain move: selling the last generation's hardware at a lower price point to expand marketshare," Arment wrote in his blog.
"But this time, it's more dramatic."
Rather than just sell the original iPad 2 with a price cut, he speculated, "they've made a new product designed to be far less expensive from day one by combining old and new parts: the 32nm iPad 2's guts, larger-cut iPhone 3GS screens, a smaller case and battery, and the new iPhone's low-power LTE chip for $100 more."
Apple is expected to launch the iPhone 5 this month, with a small, 7-inch version of the iPad expected to be coming along soon. A smaller form factor for iPad would be perfect for video apps and second-screen functionalities like social TV and remote control. A smaller device offers a less awkward experience in terms of size and portability, but would still provide a larger screen than the average smartphone for diplaying HD video. And at a rumoured price of $249, the price is right.
