France wants ‘No Berlusconi’ rule
Some French left-wing elected parliamentarians (from the local Socialist Party) have tabled a Bill designed to limit "concentration in the media sector".
The idea is to avoid France having a similar situation as in Italy, where Prime Minister Berlusconi - in effect - has control or influence over all the main networks.
Comparing President Nicolas Sarkozy's France to Berlusconi's Italy, their project plans to ban the possibility for a company that lives from public commissions to own directly or indirectly any radio or TV service, daily or news magazine.
The left-wing representatives are clearly targeting Serge Dassault and Martin Bouygues, the respective bosses of Le Figaro and TF1, and personal friends of President Sarkozy.
The concept was presented in a press conference by Senator David Assouline and Deputy Patrick Bloche, this project will be argued this week in Senate and Assembly. However, it has little or no chance of getting adopted as the Socialist Party does not have a majority within the French Assembly
