Germany gets iTunes movies first

US computer concern Apple is now offering movies on its online media portal iTunes in Germany, the first non-English language iTunes service to do so.

The films come from Hollywood studios such as Paramount Pictures, Warner Bros., MGM, Walt Disney and Sony Pictures as well as independent film companies like Universum and Shorts International. New titles will be added to iTunes at the same time as the DVD is made available for sale.

More than 500 films are currently available, including blockbusters such as Quantum of Solace, The Dark Knight and High School Musical 3: Senior Year. Under www.itunes.de, Internet users can rent or buy the movies, of which more than 100 are available in HDTV, and watch them on a PC, Mac, iPod, iPhone or via Apple TV on a conventional television set.

New releases can be purchased from 13.99, current films from 9.99 and older titles from 7.99. Rental costs are 3.99 for new releases and 2.99 for older films. A 1 surcharge applies for HDTV titles. Payment is via credit card.

Until now, Apple has only offered films on iTunes in English-speaking countries. With the move, which has long been speculated, the company will compete with existing online video libraries such as maxdome offered by ProSiebenSat.1 and Deutsche Telekoms Videoload.
