Global STB market remains strong

The global digital TV set-top-box market still offers potential growth for both makers of the equipment and those businesses involved in providing the technology.

Despite the current global economic crisis it seems that digital TV is still bucking the trend, as consumers spend less time going out and more time in front of the TV in the evening and at weekends.

According to a report by In-Stat, the set top box market has grown from 37 million units in 2001 to 190 million units in 2008.

There was a slight wobble during the latest quarter, but as the recession starts to lift the demand for new equipment should rise.

It is clear from the recent figures from BSkyB that demand for satellite TV is increasing and, more importantly for the set top box industry, demand for new HD equipment is on the rise too
