HD part of the DNA of Finnish TV

Editor RapidTVNews | 16-09-2010

Finland's largest cable TV operator DNA has revealed plans to bring HD TV to 1.5 million Finnish homes by 2011 via terrestrial broadcasting.

DNA has teamed up with Ericsson to make the HDTV experience available for 60% of all Finnish digital terrestrial TV households by 2011 and will begin deployments in the larger Finish cities by the end of this year. For its part the Swedish telecommunications and broadcasting technology giant will be the prime contractor for the project, providing network roll-out and systems integration services as well as maintenance and support services. The technology provided includes a MPEG-4 AVC HD head-end solution, along with third party products and technology for DVB-T2 HDTV broadcasting.

DNA is banking on the premise that once viewers experience HD TV into their living room, it will be there to stay. It cites an international study conducted by Ericssons ConsumerLab on TV and video consumption that concluded that when it comes to TV-related features worth paying for, excellent quality ranks the absolute highest and is also considered one of the most important features of TV services. Said Pekka Visnen, Vice president, Consumer Business, at DNA: "[The] majority of the Finnish population, 69%, want to watch movies in high definition and in the age group 15-19 the number is even higher; 89%. There's no doubt that HDTV is the future."

Added Charlotta Sund, Head of Ericsson Baltic Sea, examining the business opportunity: "Just last year, about 35 000, 1.4%, of Finnish households ordered HD channels. Considering that 1.4% will grow to 60% within a two year period says quite a lot about the great growth potential of the HDTV market. That's why we've invested so much in TV-related technology and services."
