Over half of German TV households are now digital

Over half (53%) of TV-owning households in Germany received digital television services by the end of 2008, up from 42% in 2007, according to a survey by satellite operator SES ASTRA.

In all, there were 20mn digital TV homes in the country at end-2008, served by satellite, cable, DTT and IPTV platforms, while the total number of television-owning households in Germany (including digital and analogue platforms) was 37.67mn, according to the study.

Cable was the leading television platform in Germany, serving 18.45mn homes or 49% of the market. Satellite was the country's second most popular TV platform in 2008, providing 16.2mn German households with television services by year-end, giving a 43% market share.

The terrestrial television (DVB-T2) market had 2.75mn viewers and a 7% share of of the domestic TV market by the end of 2008. Meanwhile, IPTV came in fourth place, reaching 270,000 households by the end of last year, giving a 1% share of the German TV market.

Consulting company Detecon International, part of the Deutsche Telekom Group, recently predicted that the market for IPTV services in Germany will grow more strongly over the next five years than previously expected, adding that Germany can expect to cross the 5mn-user threshold as early as 2013.
