Telefónica sees global pay-TV subs pass 2.3mn
Spanish telco Telefónica had 2.3mn pay-TV customers worldwide by the end of the first quarter of this year, up 24.8% year-on-year, with operations up and running in Spain, the Czech Republic, Peru, Chile, Colombia, Brazil and Venezuela.
The telco's share of the Spanish pay-TV market remained "steady" at 14%, and while it did not reveal the latest subscriber numbers for its IPTV service 'Imagenio', it has previously reported reaching 612,494 customers for the service by the end of 2008. Telefónica O2 Czech Republic had 127,785 subscribers to its IPTV service 'O2 TV' by the end of March, adding 13,289 in the three month period.
Latin America delivered especially strong pay-TV growth in the first quarter of this year, passing 1.6mn pay-TV customers overall, adding 74,500 accesses in the three month period and giving a growth of 30.2% year-on-year. Brazilian subsidiary Telesp reached over 500,000 customers for its DTH service, up 77.9% year-on-year; Telefonica Chile saw its number of pay-TV accesses increase 13.4% relative to March 2008 to reach almost 263,000; Telefónica del Perú reached 680,927 pay-TV customers (+7.5% year-on-year); and Colombian subsidiary Telefónica Telecom added 3,275 pay-TV customers in the first three months of this year, giving a 56.5% year-on-year growth.
Telefónica's revenues across all operations and markets reached EUR 13.703bn for the first quarter of this year, up 2.8% year-on-year, while operating income for the period rose 2.5% by the same comparison to reach EUR 5.354bn.
