Turner dumps Nuts TV

CNN will be taking over the evening capacity currently occupied by Nuts TV on the UK's Freeview' digital terrestrial TV system and will start news transmissions in January. Being available on the Freeview system will add around 10m homes for CNN and put it head-to-head with the BBC and Sky News.

Turner Broadcasting said TBS oversees a suite of news, entertainment and kids channels "and had the opportunity to re-purpose the Freeview capacity freed up by sister network NutsTV's evolution into a dedicated broadband and mobile service.

Nuts TV, a decidedly laddish' channel, launched in September 2007 and the service transmitted between the 9pm-1am hours. Nuts TV was a joint-venture between Time Warner-owned magazine publishers IPC and Turner Broadcasting, and reflected the glossy Nuts lads mag' sold in the UK. Nuts TV has suffered very low ratings.

CNNI will be available Monday to Sunday in a prime time evening block. "This move to Freeview is an opportunity to introduce CNN's European prime time programming to a new UK audience, at a time when international awareness and understanding of the global news environment has never been so critical," said Nick Wrenn, London-based Managing Editor CNN International for the EMEA region. "Certainly if our international web traffic is anything to go by, the UK's appetite for news has never been more acute, and we look forward to providing TV viewers with the international perspective that the big stories of the day demand."

Jeff Kupsky, president of Turner Broadcasting Europe, in a statement, said: "Owning such a diverse portfolio of channels has enabled us to be fleet of foot in finding solutions that will benefit a news-hungry audience at the same time as we fully transition Nuts into the digital space."
