Two Latvian TV channels to go digital in 2010
December 16th, 2009 - 10:48 UTC
by Andy Sennitt.

Latvian commercial television channels LNT and TV5 have announced that they will switch to digital technology in 2010, while TV3, as it has already stated already, will continue analogue free-of-charge broadcasting at least until the end of 2010.

TV5 digital broadcasting will be available free-of-charge in Riga and in the vicinity of Riga, while in the rest of Latvia it will be a pay-for-view channel, writes LETA. The television companys decision was announced to reporters by the National Broadcasting Council, which awaits from all broadcasting organizations in Latvia their stance regarding transition to digital broadcasting, as well as their view on whether it should remain a free-of-charge service in future.

In a statement, the National Broadcasting Council said that today, 16 December, it will hold a meeting with representatives of the Latvian State Radio and Television Centre and the telecommunications company Lattelecom to discuss possible solutions and legal aspects of closing down analogue broadcasting.

It is likely that the meeting will primarily focus on problems and possible losses that the State Radio and Television Centre is likely to suffer due to the need to ensure two broadcasting technologies for TV3, instead of halting analogue as of spring next year.
